According to the more recent studies involving the numerical simulations on a limited area model, in occurrence of some convective strong precipitation events like the one that originated the flash flood of 12-14 September 1994 in South Ticino, the initialisations assumed for soil variables can be a valuable key for the simulation. In particular, this work is focused on the soil moisture, that is a crucial component in the evaporation process over land surface. The numerical model used for this simulation is the operational version of LAMBO (Limited Area Model, BOlogna). Initial data are provided by ECMWF analyses. As initial soil moisture content two different sources are used: the ECMWF analyses in the control run and the output of off-line simulations carried out in the Po Valley area with the LSPM (Land Surface Process Model), in the frame of CLIPS experiment (Cassardo et al., 1999) in the second simulation. The data used to infer the initial soil moisture values are gathered from synoptic observations in the way described in Cassardo et al. (1999). The domain includes the MAP HP target area and all the observations refer to the period 1st January - 30th September 1995.
