This essay aims to disentangle the role of formal and informal rules in the recruitment processes and career progressions of Italian university professors. In the first part, we give an overview of university legislation concerning the recruitment and the career advancement of university professors since the 1970s. In the second part, we look at gender inequalities in the career tracks of female and male professors, and we discuss the reasons for their different professional outcomes.

Abstract
