This essay focuses on the threshold chronotope as the field of representation permitting and helping shape the material, emotional and artistic experiences lyrically dramatized in Walt Whitman's "Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking." It considers how the phases of the rite of passage which unfolds, in memory, in the poem are inextricably linked to the shoreline in terms of space, time, emotion and meaning. Throughout, attention is paid to shifts in voice, time frames and imagery as well as to Whitman's use of a participial style to convey and embody a sense of liminality.
