Aim. The aim of this study was to find out the damaging effects on cellular lines that are in contact with gadolinium. Methods. This study was carried out with human chondrocytes, sinovial cells, Hoffa's body cells and mesenchimal cells of bone. These cells were cultivated in monolayer for 7-14 days, exposed to gadolinium for 16 hours (1.88 mg/mL and 18.8 mg/mL), than the estimation of cellular vitality with Trypan Blue was made, to assess cells in necrosis, and with antibody anti-ki 67 antigen, to assess cell proliferation. Labelled cells were counted with optical microscope in order to estimate the mean ratio between vital cells and necrotic (blue), and between cell in replication (positive to antibody anti-ki 67 antigen) and cell not in replication. Results. Present results express the inhibition of proliferation and the induction to necrosis of Magnevist IV (Gadopentetic acid dimeglumine salt) on cells tested. The means obtained, expressed as index of gadolinium influence, represent the inhibition of this substance on the singular valuated cellular line. A little induction to necrosis and a decrease of cellular proliferation for dosing like that used during artronuclear magnetic resonance was noticed. The concentration 10 times higher, that shown great inhibition of proliferation and induction of necrosis, allowed to corroborate the dose-dependence and to make an ideal positive curve of exposure test. Conclusion. Necrosis and cell proliferation suffer the consequence of gadolinium exposure.
