The article deals with the issue of translating Dante Alighieri's Divina Commedia into Arabic. It examines the history of translation of the Italian work from the end of the nineteenth century until the last decades of twentieth century. It focuses in particular on two major translations published in Egypt and in Beirut and compares the two works taking into account the differences in translating the Commedia into prose or poetical forms. It finally questions the role of translation in the formation of national canons of literature and the emergence of world literature in post-colonial contexts.
