The immunological bases of the TPHA test are discussed, together with its technique. Reference is also made to the relevant literature. The results of a quantitative serological study carried out on treated and untreated primary syphilis are presented. The TPHA test gives positive results after classic serology and the FTA ABS test, in some cases, indeed, after the commencement of specific treatment. It shows negative results after standard treatment later than the WR and VDRL, but in many cases before the FTA ABS. Serum resistant clinical cases generally present TPHA titers that are not particularly high and not closely influenced by penicillin. Delay in the commencement of treatment may produce such serum resistance.
