The essay is the first part of cross-disciplinary survey of the "theatrical" experience, examining the issue from the origin of theatre in ancient Greece to the Eighteenth Century. Documents and texts pertaining to history of religions, aesthetics, philology and anthropology, as well as physiology and psychology, are analyzed in order to reconstruct the outlooks on the condition of the experience of performing arts across different cultures and historical moments.
