In this essay, World War I's traces in collective memory are identified through an analysis of the French theatrical production of the 20ies. If plays such as Giraudoux's La Guerre de Troie n'aura pas lieu and Siegfried are recognised clear expressions of post-war atmospheres and souls, an incredible number of 'minor' French playwrights still to be explored into depth provide very fascinating variations on the theme. Grounded on rare critical excerpts and chronicles published in the 20ies and 30ies, as well as on a selection of authors and plays, this essays aims to draw an outlook of French drama in the post-war period, with examples from texts focusing on some recurrent significant thematic paths and textual structures, where the tragedy of the individual man becomes a metaphor of "The Tragedy" of humanity and where personal, inner conflicts come to mirror global, public questions.
