The rhetor Aelius Aristides knew for sure Aristophanes, and also Cratinus and Eupolis, perhaps through anthologies. Aristides' writings provide precious information about comedy, both as concerns its performance in Smyrna in Asia Minor, and as concerns its circulation in the imperial age. Moreover, Aristides himself authored a sophisticated prose writing, in which he refashioned the parabasis of ancient drama. This speech, which avoids personal aggression (indeed a typical ingredient of ancient comic poets' language), was aimed to educate his contemporaries.

Abstract
The rhetor Aelius Aristides knew for sure Aristophanes, and also Cratinus and Eupolis, perhaps through anthologies. Aristides' writings provide precious information about comedy, both as concerns its performance in Smyrna in Asia Minor, and as concerns its circulation in the imperial age. Moreover, Aristides himself authored a sophisticated prose writing, in which he refashioned the parabasis of ancient drama. This speech, which avoids personal aggression (indeed a typical ingredient of ancient comic poets' language), was aimed to educate his contemporaries.File in questo prodotto:
