This article has shed new light on the emigration patterns of Ukrainians and Moldovans in Europe, where mainly women from these countries tend to migrate. This is done by comparing their flows to Italy, which is their main destination in Europe and where they are employed as domestic and care workers. While non-EU Eastern European women migrant working in this sector are often considered a homogenous group, strong differences exist in relation to their migratory paths and to their strategies in securing the wellbeing of their transnational families. In fact, their national background plays a crucial role in the choices they make. This brings a fundamental difference regarding the trajectories of the two groups and the duration of their stay in Italy. Moreover, from the employment perspective, they take different job roles within the same labour sector that are functional to their overall migratory projects.
