"Unieuropa": The Bulletin of CIME, the Italian Council of the European Movement, 1971-1979

Unieuropa è il periodico di informazione del Consiglio italiano del Movimento europeo (CIME). Uscito solo per alcuni mesi nel 1957 (in coincidenza con il rilancio del Movimento europeo in Italia e con il Congresso d’Europa all’EUR del giugno di quell’anno), la sua pubblicazione venne interrotta per oltre vent’anni, sostituito, parzialmente, dal «Notiziario Organizzativo» (1965-1967) e dalla «Lettera d’Informazione» (1968-1969). Nel 1971 il nome della testata venne ripreso per una nuova edizione della rivista, sotto la direzione del Segretario generale del CIME ed esponente delle ACLI, Angelo Lotti, al quale subentrerà dal 1980, in qualità di direttore responsabile, Giorgio Bonelli. Il periodico andò ben oltre l’impostazione tipica del bollettino informativo ad uso dei militanti e dei simpatizzanti e, dal punto di vista della comunicazione, ebbe un ruolo non marginale nell’ambito dell’europeismo italiano di quegli anni, ciò anche in considerazione dell’attivismo dimostrato dal CIME nel corso della lunga presidenza di Giuseppe Petrilli dal 1964 al 1985. Questo periodico aveva la funzione di comunicare certamente le iniziative promosse dal CIME e dagli altri movimenti europeisti , di offrire un resoconto, anche dettagliato, delle riunioni degli organi sociali, in particolare delle relazioni svolte dal presidente e dal segretario generale, ma di informare anche dell’attività delle istituzioni comunitarie, in primis il Parlamento europeo, degli esiti dei Vertici europei, pubblicando inoltre articoli e commenti dei principali dirigenti del CIME e interventi in occasione di convegni, seminari e incontri pubblici. La pubblicazione di «Unieuropa», come ho detto, prese avvio nel 1971 e l’uscita della rivista fu regolare fino ai primi anni Novanta. In considerazione del limite temporale del volume, il 1979, mi sono soffermato però solo sul primo decennio del periodico. Unieuropa is an information periodical from CIME, the Italian Council of the European Movement. Only a few monthly issues were published in 1957 (to coincide with the relaunch of the European Movement in Italy and with the Congress of Europe at EUR in June that year), and then its publication was interrupted for over twenty years, partly replaced by «Notiziario Organizzativo» (1965-1967) and «Lettera d’Informazione» (1968-1969). In 1971, the title of the periodical was revived for a new edition of the magazine, under the direction of the Secretary General of CIME and member of ACLI, Angelo Lotti, and then later in 1980 by Giorgio Bonelli as the editorial director. The magazine went far beyond the usual format for an information bulletin for use by activists and supporters and, in terms of communication, played somewhat more than a marginal role in the Italian Europeanism of those years, particularly considering how active CIME was under the long presidency of Giuseppe Petrilli from 1964 to 1985. This magazine certainly had the function of communicating the initiatives being promoted by CIME and by the other pro-European movements, of providing a detailed report on the meetings of the governing bodies, particularly of the reports given by the President and the Secretary General, and also of informing about the activities of the Community institutions, primarily the European Parliament, about the outcomes of European summits, also publishing articles and comments by the key executive of CIME and speeches from conferences, seminaries and public meetings. As said, the publishing of «Unieuropa» got underway in 1971 and it was regularly issued through to the early nineties. In view of the upper time limit of the book – 1979 – I take into consideration the periodical’s first decade.
