The main problem is not if the Temple Scroll is an authoritative text, the problem is whether it was ever regarded as an authoritative text. We have explored two opposite answers to this problem. (1) No one ever considered the Temple Scroll an authoritative text. A text does not always or necessarily hide a group, let alone a sect. What if the Temple Scroll would be the work of single author? (2) The Temple scroll might have been authoritative for all Jews in Second Temple times. In fact, it might have been part of the Temple library material on which the Zadokite priesthood worked to prepare its own sacred literature. Both these answers are possible though impossible to prove beyond a reasonable doubt and both are in need of foolproof verification. On the other hand, working hypotheses can offer a better comprehension of the Qumran literature as a hermeneutical circle, in which not only the parts can be understood from an understanding of the whole, but the whole can be understood from an understanding of the parts.

Authority and Text in the Temple Scroll
