Transmission of Scientific Knowledge and Editorial Policy at Turin Academy of Sciences

The Turin Academy of Sciences played an important role in Italian cultural development and made significant contributions by conveying local and external knowledge as well as by suggesting new research themes. In this paper I will illustrate the history of the periodicals of this Academy from 1759 to 1800 by focusing on the structure, the main programmatic statements and the editorial strategies of this learned journal, mainly as far as concerns the scientific contents included, the procedures for evaluating the works submitted for publication, and the language chosen for the publishing. In particular, the study of official documents preserved in its Archives – that is, the Register of journal changes, the Tables of delivery of the Proceedings and the Register of correspondences with foreign students and institutions – allows me to emphasise the importance of this periodical as a sort of international publication platform for researchers in Turin, thanks to its anchorage to a widespread network of collaborations with foreign students and Institutions. First of all I will illustrate the international approach of the Turin Academy of Sciences, briefly describing its history and structure, then I will analyse in detail the academic issues and their role as international vehicle of knowledge and research.
