In this paper, reference will be made to some significant aspects of the pragmatic perspective, mainly in relation to the interaction of linguistic structure with the principles of linguistic usage, starting from the global and local context and the notion of appropriateness. In order to cope with the complex issue of diaphasic variation, macro features relevant to the interactional development (that is, setting, participants/agents, type of interaction) will be taken into account, both in the canonical situation of utterance and in other interactional contexts. The analysis will focus on some characteristics of new forms of communication, among which intra- and inter-gender variability. To conclude, the intertwining of in/formal registers will be highlighted also in other, more formal, kinds of interactions, and a trend towards a reduction of the diaphasic range will be hinted at, especially in CMC.
