Italija i Italijani u Njegoševoj prepisci

Italy and the Italian in Njegoš's letters Njegoš’s various journeys and time spent in Italy in cities like Trieste, Venice, and Naples made their way into some of his most important poetic works, such as: Tri dana u Trijestu, Pirovanje, Polazak Pompeja, Gorski vijenac, and Lažni car Šćepan Mali. Presence of Italy can also be noticed in the letters he as a statesman, vladika and a poet, exchanged with various well-known people of his time. Letters written to his relatives and close friends, especially parts on Italy and the Italian, are paragraphs where we discover Njegoš as more forthright and less formal than he is expected to be, taking into consideration his position and the responsibilities he usually had. He records his opinions, thoughts and feelings and reveals himself as a curious traveller who is interested in the beauty of nature, in the history of art and monuments. In this article I analyse some of his letters which may be considered as documents, a literary text and a contribution to the travel narratives and testify about Njegoš’s connections with Italy and his correspondents.
