Five selected cases of cocaine-intoxication related deaths examinated during the years 1988-1992 at the Legal Medicine Institute, University of Bari, are reported. The microscopic pathology of liver was studied. Per- ivenular (zone-3) coagulative-type necrosis, perivenular (zone-3) and midzonal (zone-2) reticular network collapse, large- and small-dropled steatosis were the predominant hepatic morphological features. These findings are supposed related to hepatic oxidative cocaine metabolism. The pathological role of reactive metabolites generated from cocaine through the cytochrome P-450 monoxygenase liver system is discussed.
