This paper will examine three orations by Aelius Aristides, the first two of which dedicated to former students of him (the Birthday Speech to Apellas and the Funeral Oration for Eteoneus), the third one to Aristides' old grammaticus, Alexander of Cotiaeum (the Funeral Adress in Honor of Alexander). It will be argued that the particular fashion of Atticism displayed in these orations might reflect the taste of Alexander of Cotiaeum, and might have influenced on its turn that of contemporary lexicographers, such as Phrynicus.

Abstract

This paper will examine three orations by Aelius Aristides, the first two of which dedicated to former students of him (the Birthday Speech to Apellas and the Funeral Oration for Eteoneus), the third one to Aristides' old grammaticus, Alexander of Cotiaeum (the Funeral Adress in Honor of Alexander). It will be argued that the particular fashion of Atticism displayed in these orations might reflect the taste of Alexander of Cotiaeum, and might have influenced on its turn that of contemporary lexicographers, such as Phrynicus.
