This work analyses the relationship between censorship and the so-called 'guerre des livres' by drawing attention to the censorial role of translations. Indeed, translation is often studied as an instrument of circulation of knowledge, but translation, as a communication device, also had the function of refuting systems of thought in the Old Regime. The aim here is to relate the two aspects, writing and censorship, through the case study of Italian translations of French texts published against the culture of the Enlightenment.

Abstract

This work analyses the relationship between censorship and the so-called 'guerre des livres' by drawing attention to the censorial role of translations. Indeed, translation is often studied as an instrument of circulation of knowledge, but translation, as a communication device, also had the function of refuting systems of thought in the Old Regime. The aim here is to relate the two aspects, writing and censorship, through the case study of Italian translations of French texts published against the culture of the Enlightenment.
