Katherine Esau, an American botanist of Russian origin, is reminded for her important contribution given to Plant Virology during more than half a century of research activity. Since 1930, she began to make research on the structural alterations produced by virus infection, an activity she carried out with great competence collaterally to specialized studies on Plant Anatomy, in particular on the phloem. As professor of Botany at the University of Davis, California, she published books and reviews of high scientific content and recognised the importance of the electron microscopy as a fundamental technique for investigatigating the cytology of virus-infected tissues. In this field, it must be cited the experimental evidence offered on the presence of virus particles inside the plasmodesmata. Abstract

In 1989, Katherine Esau was awarded the "National Medal of Science" as model for women in science.
