Ivo Andrić‟s diplomatic career was built initally in Rome, where he served as secretary of the Consulate of the Kingdom SHS. Private letters from this period, sent between 1920 and 1926 to his friends and co-workers living in the homeland, are of great importance, since in this letters Andrić describes his difficult relationship with Italy. They have both a documentary and a literary value: in that period Andrić was still the poet of EX PONTO and of NEMIRI, and his letters are full of lyrical and poetic scenes. But the most relevant aspect is that they represent an important testimony to the influence of Italian culture on the formation of a young author and of his prose.
