Locri Epizephyrii constitutes one of the best known case-studies concerning workshops and handicraft production in Magna Graecia. Many production units and related structures are known at the site and a wide potters’ quarter has been excavated in the area of Centocamere. The documentation is rather limited for the archaic and classical periods (e.g., the huge kiln near the U-shaped stoa), but for the hellenistic period, the so-called regular and irregular insulae at the periphery of the inhabited area offer a wide range of data. The choice of the topographical location of the quarter is now better explained due to the explorations carried out in the wide area near the fortifications and the coast-line. Our knowledge about the production centres at Locri has improved recently thanks to the discovery of the first metalwork atelier and to the exploration of some kilns in the central part of the urban area.
