In Philoctetes, Sophocles offers a misleading representation of Time: Philoctetes only lives in the past, Neoptolemus lives in the present and Odysseus, the more ambiguous among the three main characters, is the only one who handles past, present and future. The deceptive role played by Time is also showed in the words of Neoptolemus – who invents his past –, in the False Merchant’s story and finally in the irredeemable fate, which, imposed on Philoctetes, has precisely determined his sufferings.

Abstract

In Philoctetes, Sophocles offers a misleading representation of Time: Philoctetes only lives in the past, Neoptolemus lives in the present and Odysseus, the more ambiguous among the three main characters, is the only one who handles past, present and future. The deceptive role played by Time is also showed in the words of Neoptolemus – who invents his past –, in the False Merchant’s story and finally in the irredeemable fate, which, imposed on Philoctetes, has precisely determined his sufferings.
