The indication to central venous cannulation in critically ill patients is dramatically increasing in the last few years due to more complex therapies that are not fit to be delivered via peripheral veins. The main drawback of central venous access is the risk of serious complications and the growing scarcity and availability of experienced operators. Ultrasound guided peripheral access to central venous system is the right answer to this growing problem, due to the fact that this technique is not exclusive for doctors but can be performed also by a dedicated nurse team. The aim of the book is to teach the fundamentals of the emerging technique of ultrasound guided approach to peripheral veins, to give tips about the right choice of materials and the organization of a dedicated team within an hospital or a supportive care program. Exhaustive information will be given about the prevention, diagnosis and management of main drawbacks and complications of this procedure. Legal and economic issues will also be considered. The main targets of this book are nutritionists, oncologists, anesthesiologists, surgeons, ICU and surgical theater nurses
