Sibelius and Busoni: a complementary friendship

La costante amicizia fra Sibelius e Busoni fu del tutto particolare, perché i due musicisti ebbero un temperamento assai diverso e seguirono strade compositive pressoché opposte. Malgrado ciò, Busoni nutrì sempre una grande stima per i lavori del collega e ne favorì la diffusione in Germania e in Italia perché vide in loro quella stessa spontanea freschezza che gli faceva ad esempio apprezzare anche la musica degli Indiani d’America. I lavori di Sibelius avevano per Busoni una buona carica di novità che poteva giovare agli allestimenti dei programmi concertistici da lui allestiti e sovente personalmente diretti a Berlino. Sibelius da par suo nutrì una grande stima per il Busoni concertista, meno per il Busoni compositore e per il Busoni direttore d’orchestra. Tuttavia ebbe sempre una grande riconoscenza nei confronti dell’amico perché gli aveva permesso di affermarsi nel continente europeo e di non rimanere, come ebbe a dire, una semplice “apparizione dai boschi”. The constant friendship between Sibelius and Busoni was very special, because the two musicians had a very different temperament and they followed almost opposite compositional roads. In spite of that, Busoni always felt a great esteem for the works of his colleague and favored its spread in Germany and in Italy, because he saw in them the same spontaneous freshness that led him to appreciate, for example, such as the music of the American Indians. Sibelius works had for Busoni a good innovative strength which could benefit the concerts he organized (and often conducted) in Berlin. Sibelius for his part harbored great admiration for Busoni piano performer, less for Busoni composer and conductor. However always he had a great appreciation for the friend, because he had allowed him to assert itself on the European continent and not to be, as he said, a simple “appearance from the woods”.
