At the beginning of the twentieth century, Italian trade unions - which had by then grown into nationwide entities - made their first steps on the international scene, engaging with the diverse realities that prevailed in the main European countries. The “free” German trade union represented a fundamental organisational example for the socialists, particularly for federations' leaders; from a political perspective, however, the confederations' leaders took English labour as a model. The maturity of the British system proved appealing for republicans too. The French case, on the other hand, mostly attracted the attention of revolutionary currents, trade unionists and anarchists. For Catholics, the German confessional associations constituted both an organisational and an ideological benchmark.
