The purpose of this paper is to provide a general overview of some recent studies on electronic literature carried out in France. The first section analyses different attempts to delineate the field of electronic literature, and demonstrates that too strict definitions tend to be replaced by broader and more interdisciplinary approaches. The second part focuses on some of the most relevant works published in France, so as to pinpoint the key features of contemporary theories on electronic literature. In particular, the article observes the development of an ethically oriented approach.
