The contribution investigates into Pierre-Louis Ginguené’s approach to literature – in particular to Italian Literature – in his critical articles on periodicals and above all in his monumental Histoire littéraire d’Italie. Educated in the age of Enlightenment, Ginguené (1748-1816) was active at the turn of the century and was part of the group of the Idéologues. His studies in Literature are fully inspired by an historical approach and by the need to contextualise poetics and aesthetics, writers and works, in their age and milieu, as theorised in the pages of the Idéologues. Parallels with Madame de Staël and Claude Fauriel are discussed.
