Objectives: Dentists daily perform surgical procedures in unprotected health facilities; therefore they must be able to recognize the signs and symptoms occurring in medical emergencies that may compromise the patient's vital parameters. Materials and methods: A review of current guidelines for first aid in neurological, respiratory and cardiovascular emergencies was carried out. Results. The current guidelines for Basic Life Support (BLS) are reported. The parameters for diagnosis and treatment of major urgent cases and emergencies in a dental office are also described. Conclusions: The entire dental team should be trained to master BLS skills and to provide diagnostic and outpatient treatment of clinical urgent cases and emergencies.
