This paper considers the evolution of the book and the idea of the book as vehicle of knowledge through the centuries, with an attention to the literary anticipations of the current scenario as found in the writings of a selection of French authors from the 18th-19th and early 20th century belonging to the so-called "littérature d'anticipation". The main aim of this article is also to open up a discussion, based on some exemplary case studies, on some new perspectives for academic research in the digital era. This essay is among the very outputs of the research project "Open Literature" (P.I.: Cristina Trinchero).
