At the same time, superficial and abstract readings tend to confine the Saint in a conventional exemplarity. The story of Francis patron of ecologists is just one of the special and extraordinary case of his fortune over the centuries. This article traces the key stages of the presence and the functions of the figure of Francis in the contemporary world.
