A new genus and species of remora, Oligoremora rhenana n. g. n. sp., is described in detail and compared with all other extant and fossil representatives of the family Echeneidae. It resembles in its meristic data the extant representatives of the genus Remora, but also shares several morphological details with the genus Echeneis. Taphonomical details of particular interest, such as pectinated lamellae that are detached from the intercalary bones together with main parts of the neurocranium during fossilization are discussed, as are presumable host specificity.

Abstract

A new genus and species of remora, Oligoremora rhenana n. g. n. sp., is described in detail and compared with all other extant and fossil representatives of the family Echeneidae. It resembles in its meristic data the extant representatives of the genus Remora, but also shares several morphological details with the genus Echeneis. Taphonomical details of particular interest, such as pectinated lamellae that are detached from the intercalary bones together with main parts of the neurocranium during fossilization are discussed, as are presumable host specificity.
