The paper deals with Relicários, a set of five sonnets by Roberto de Mesquita (1871-1923), an Azorean poet whose poems were collected after his death in the volume Almas Cativas (1931). The paper’s focus is on such themes as the emanation of the past, the “soul” with which the poet endows some inanimate objects, the description of these sames objects as repositories of memories. In this regard, Mesquita seems to use themes and images of others poets’ works as a starting point for the development of his own poems.

Abstract

The paper deals with Relicários, a set of five sonnets by Roberto de Mesquita (1871-1923), an Azorean poet whose poems were collected after his death in the volume Almas Cativas (1931). The paper’s focus is on such themes as the emanation of the past, the “soul” with which the poet endows some inanimate objects, the description of these sames objects as repositories of memories. In this regard, Mesquita seems to use themes and images of others poets’ works as a starting point for the development of his own poems.
