With the aim of merging contrastive linguistics and linguistic translation analysis, the paper discusses different augmentation systems in Italian and German and their translation strategies from Italian into German. In the first part, a multi-layered description of the “augmentation” phenomenon on morphological, prosodic, interactive and stylistic levels shows divergences and convergences between the two languages. Drawing on a corpus of lexicographic data and Italian- German translations, the second part discusses how Italian augmentation is dealt with in bilingual dictionaries and in authentic text occurrences. The aim of the paper is to provide a comprehensive description of the translation strategies of Italian augmentatives into German that takes into account the context-sensitivity of this specific intensification device.
