Through the rebuilding of Mario Bonfantini’s intellectual and emotional path and the analysis of his critical essays, the article investigates the close relationship of the “professor” of Novara with the works and moral lessons of Vittorio Alfieri and Massimo D’Azeglio, two authors who are indispensable to understand Bonfantini’s position towards history and literature of the Risorgimento. In the sign of Alfieri, Bonfantini proposes a gallery of authors, like D’Azeglio, characterized by a great moral solidity and by political integrity, who move in the suffering Italian context.
