This paper aims to discuss the theoretical framework of the contagion or infection or virality theories, according to which the semiosphere and in general the circulation of ideas are produced by the diffusion of semantic elements through imitation. An historical frame for the recurrent fashion of this kind of theories is proposed. Against these theories many theoretical, episthemological but also ethical objections are raised.
