Since the Sixties of last century, the informational metaphor has become an interpretation tool for phenomena related with the living world. The processes of exchange of information, that is to say communication, are essential for maintaining the internal organisation of living organisms as well as to elicit their responsivity to environmental stimula. These processes exploit various communication codes, amongst which the molecular code is particularly relevant. A few examples of signal transduction and translation into the molecular code will be analysed. The issue of the assignment of meaning to the information exchanged within the biological enviroment, that is the object of biosemiosis, will be discussed briefly.

Abstract

Since the Sixties of last century, the informational metaphor has become an interpretation tool for phenomena related with the living world. The processes of exchange of information, that is to say communication, are essential for maintaining the internal organisation of living organisms as well as to elicit their responsivity to environmental stimula. These processes exploit various communication codes, amongst which the molecular code is particularly relevant. A few examples of signal transduction and translation into the molecular code will be analysed. The issue of the assignment of meaning to the information exchanged within the biological enviroment, that is the object of biosemiosis, will be discussed briefly.
