This paper offers an exploratory theoretical attempt to apply the notion of musical atmosphere to the aesthetic experience of jazz as audio-tactile improvisatory music. This helps to understand jazz-specific expressiveness, on the one hand, avoiding the reductionism of Levinson's recent proposal and, on the other hand, developing his theory of the musical persona.

Abstract

This paper offers an exploratory theoretical attempt to apply the notion of musical atmosphere to the aesthetic experience of jazz as audio-tactile improvisatory music. This helps to understand jazz-specific expressiveness, on the one hand, avoiding the reductionism of Levinson's recent proposal and, on the other hand, developing his theory of the musical persona.
