This paper provides a general historical introduction to the subject of this book. The author argues in favour of the need to adopt a "longue durée" perspective when studying the phenomenon 'Latin in Byzantium', and suggests a chronology spanning from the age of Constantine to the dawn of the High Middle Ages.
