The interaction between the living and the dead is a key element to grasp different aspects of society: not only the properly memorial aspects, but the forms of organization of society and power, religious cults, scientific knowledges. This wealth of values and implications can be understood only by moving in a broad horizon, from both a chronological and thematic point of view, comparing sacred relics and bodies of heroes (object of a secular devotion), but also the humiliated and vilified bodies of the political enemies or the anonymous bodies gathered in collective cemeteries. In all these cases the human remains are the object of an intense struggle for their control. By integrating different scientific points of view and by deepening the Italian reality, the volume therefore aims to fill an important historiographical void.
