The article deals with the role that referendums have played and could still play in the European integration process. The analysis shows the difficulty of classifying referendum polling of several countries in a univocal way. Actually, an exam of electoral votes split in different features, put into light really deep differences that characterize on every topic European States that, since 1972, have announced referendums on EU issues. Eventually, the article shows that the decision to involve the people could be the final outcome of the weakness of political institutions.
