Abstract

Inside the citadel of Old Nisa-Mihrdatkirt two large regular depressions in the central-east part of the site have been generally interpreted in the scientific literature as water basins. However, this interpretation remains problematic for the excavations here carried out did not return any substantial evidence to support this hypothesis. In Old Nisa the water supply could be also carried out through groundwater wells. This paper concerns an underground water system discovered during the latest excavations in the SW corner of the fortress by the Italian-Turkmen expedition.
