This article tackles the problem of defining smart contracts. In particular, it reviews the existing definitions of smart contracts in some of the main laws enacted and scholarly articles published so far, proposes its own version, and then moves on to consider to what extent new legal categories are warranted to deal with this new way of forming legally binding agreements
