The essay takes into consideration J.M. Coetzee’s work, focusing on the implicit dialogue with literature and contemporary thought as concerns the responsibility of writing in representing history and the human. Accordingly, it explores those narrative strategies the author uses for establishing a meaningful connection between aesthetics and ethics, that be able to empower the act of reading: autofiction as a metaphorical self-translation, the variation of point of view, the hybridization between the novel-form and essay-form. The aim is to show how hybrid writing – especially in Coetzee’s last production spanning from Elizabeth Costello (2003) to The Good Story: Exchanges on Truth, Fiction and Psychotherapy, (2015) and Moral Tales (2017) – assumes the function of discussing on new basis the relationship between truth and fiction, at the same time extending the field of the representation to inedited forms and modes such as those connected with the philosophical question of the animal between narrative imagination and social engagement. Conversazioni su verità, finzione, psicoterapia (2017, or. 2015), e Bugie.
