Livestock production substantially accounts for managing mountains development. However, the interviews with the breeders of three territories of NW Italian Alps showed how difficult is the economic enhancement of their mountain products. Their strong personal motivation in rearing livestock, along with their passion for living in the alpine regions allowed the survival of these small farms. These breeders believe that they shall play an important role for maintaining landscape. They however think that their services are not sufficiently recognized and therefore need support by new collaborative models.

Abstract

Livestock production substantially accounts for managing mountains development. However, the interviews with the breeders of three territories of NW Italian Alps showed how difficult is the economic enhancement of their mountain products. Their strong personal motivation in rearing livestock, along with their passion for living in the alpine regions allowed the survival of these small farms. These breeders believe that they shall play an important role for maintaining landscape. They however think that their services are not sufficiently recognized and therefore need support by new collaborative models.
