In this interview Ugo Volli reconstructs his path as intellectual and semiotic scholar from 1967 to today. He talks about some mentoring figures of his (such as Gillo Dorfles and Umberto Eco), the evolution of Italian and French scholarship from “semiology” (epitomized by Roland Barthes) to “semiotics” (Algirdas J. Greimas and his Paris School), his interest in bodily and existential theatre wherein the role of the actor is questioned ( Jerszy Grotowski, Eugenio Barba, Carmelo Bene), the lack of contemporary intellectual figures in public discourse, the role of humanities and social media, and the future of semiotics.
