This chapter discusses the discursive strategies employed by Jeremy Corbyn in his speeches, official statements and newspaper articles from 2016-17. These strategies may be interpreted as left-wing and populist or both, but at the same time they also engage with (and fit into) a nationalist agenda. Through the analysis of the two keywords of the Labour leader’s discourse, i.e. “people” and “British”, and following the criteria of the Discourse-Historical Approach, the chapter suggests that Corbyn’s discourse realises an ideological intersection of nationalism and populism.

Abstract

This chapter discusses the discursive strategies employed by Jeremy Corbyn in his speeches, official statements and newspaper articles from 2016-17. These strategies may be interpreted as left-wing and populist or both, but at the same time they also engage with (and fit into) a nationalist agenda. Through the analysis of the two keywords of the Labour leader’s discourse, i.e. “people” and “British”, and following the criteria of the Discourse-Historical Approach, the chapter suggests that Corbyn’s discourse realises an ideological intersection of nationalism and populism.
