Abstract : In this paper, we will present metaphor as the semiotic category which globally characterises brand communication: indeed, working on brand names aims to remove the brand products from the realm of banal and undiffer-entiated everyday items and to distinguish them from similar competitors’ prod-ucts, in order to give them a different status. This new status is achieved through the name giving. Within this shared background, metaphoric names represent very salient examples of metaphoric semiosis in advertinsing: a “squared meta-phor”. To argue this hypothesis, some names from the perfume market sector will be analysed.
