Le conflit argumentatif au prisme de la métaphore: l'interview d'Emmanuel Macron du 15 octobre 2017

ABSTRACT: Based on the notion of nominal conflict, a process by which a politician contests a designation put forward by an opponent in order to impose a new one in accordance with his argumentative aims, I have analyzed the case where the nominal conflict places two metaphors against one another. The allotopy introduced by the metaphor makes it possible to move argumentative conflict from the basic referential universe to a more abstract level, represented by the symbolism of the metaphor, and thus to limit the risks associated with a direct confrontation. My hypothesis is illustrated by the metaphor of the “premiers de cordée”, used by President Macron during a television interview, as a result of a nominal conflict with the journalist who addressed a question to him. In turn, I analyze the different rhetorical, discursive and polyphonic features, as well as the co-verbal components of his performance (prosodic and gestural), which contribute to the salience of the metaphor. The reactions of political opponents, also defined by metaphors , definitely show the effectiveness of this figure in the management of confrontation: sublimation of the conflict through its placement on the metaphorical ground allows to defuse its violence, which is always damaging for the ethos of the speaker, and to replace it, once again thanks to the metaphorical component, by re-defining him as a champion of moderation (phronimos). RESUME: A partir de la notion de conflit nominatif, procédé par lequel un homme politique conteste une désignation avancée par un contradicteur afin d'en imposer une autre en conformité avec ses visées argumentatives, nous avons analysé le cas de figure où le conflit nominatif oppose deux métaphores. L'allotopie introduite par la métaphore permet de déplacer le conflit argumentatif de l'univers référentiel de base vers un niveau plus abstrait, représenté par le symbolisme de la métaphore, et de limiter ainsi les risques liés à un affrontement direct. Notre hypothèse est illustrée par la métaphore des premiers de cordée, utilisée par le président Macron lors d'un entretien télévisé, à l'issue d'un conflit nominatif avec le journaliste lui ayant adressé une question. Nous analysons successivement les différents aspects rhétoriques, discursifs et polyphoniques, ainsi que les composantes coverbales de sa performance, prosodiques et gestuelles, qui contribuent à la mise en saillance de la métaphore. Les réactions des opposants politiques, toujours par métaphore interposée, achèvent de montrer l'efficacité de cette figure pour la gestion de la confrontation: la sublimation du conflit grâce à son placement sur le terrain métaphorique permet en effet d'en désamorcer la violence, toujours nuisible pour l'ethos du locuteur, et de la remplacer par une recherche stylistique le mettant en valeur en tant que champion de modération (phronimos).
