The production of chestnut trees in the past was considered very marginal in nursery activities. There are still few chestnut nurseries in Italy today: most companies sell chestnut trees produced by others and therefore they cannot be defined as nurseries. The main problem related to chestnut trees production is the lack of technical skills on cultivation and nursery production of this species. Viale and Bassi nurseries were started in the 1980s in Cuneo Province (N-W Italy) and now they are among the main Italian nurseries specialized in chestnut tree production. These two nurseries produce chestnut national and regional cultivars with continuous search for quality standard improvement and a good quality/price ratio of the plant material.
