The self-comparison with a cicada (tettix), that Lucianus suggests Archilochus made (Luc. Pseudolog. 1, quoting Archil. fr. 223 W.), offers the key to better understand the traditions about the poet’s death and the Pythian response to his alleged murderer (Plut. De sera num. vind. 17; Suda, s.v. α 4112 Adler). Therefore, the tomb of “Cicada” (Tettix) mentioned in our sources is probably a misunderstanding of the tomb of “the cicada”, that is of Archilochus himself.

Abstract

The self-comparison with a cicada (tettix), that Lucianus suggests Archilochus made (Luc. Pseudolog. 1, quoting Archil. fr. 223 W.), offers the key to better understand the traditions about the poet’s death and the Pythian response to his alleged murderer (Plut. De sera num. vind. 17; Suda, s.v. α 4112 Adler). Therefore, the tomb of “Cicada” (Tettix) mentioned in our sources is probably a misunderstanding of the tomb of “the cicada”, that is of Archilochus himself.
